Toward a Conceptual Taxonomy of Cognitive Load Theory Applications in Special Education

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) has spread across special education research in the past decade, touching reading, writing, mathematics, assessment, teacher training, and assistive technology. This growth is good news, but it has happened without any shared system for organizing it. Different researchers use the same theory to study very different things, and there is currently no map that shows how these applications relate to one another. This paper responds to that gap by proposing a conceptual taxonomy of CLT applications in special education. It explains why taxonomies matter for a growing field, reviews the scattered applications that already exist, sets out the principles used to build the taxonomy, and presents seven domains, instructional, assessment, learner-specific, teacher, technology, research, and system-level applications, along with the relationships among them. The paper closes with a discussion of how the taxonomy could benefit different groups working in this space and how it should be refined through international and cross-cultural input over time. The taxonomy proposed here is a starting point rather than a finished product, meant to give researchers a shared language rather than a fixed set of rules.
