Abstract

In this paper, the authors have conducted a historical survey on the Wars of Gujrat and the enforcement of British dominance over the Sikh Empire in the mid-nineteenth century. They have discussed the importance of Gujrat regarding the First War of the Sikh Empire and the Second Sikh War of the British Empire, leading to the final Battle of Gujrat of February 1849. They have outlined the crisis of the Sikh Empire after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the internal divisions within the Khalsa Army of the Empire. They have simultaneously discussed the ambitions of the British Empire regarding the influence of the British East India Company. By evaluating strategies in warfare, troop mobilization, use of artillery, and outcome in battles, it can clearly be shown in this study that British organization, training, and firepower negated greater Sikh strength. The Battle of Gujrat marks the conclusive end to Sikh dominion and immediately leads to the annexation of Punjab in March 1849. This paper will continue to investigate political implications in matters related to administration following British victory in Gujrat, in terms of rearranged administration, forces, and economy in Punjab. The Battle of Gujrat marks an extremely significant moment in forging colonial domination and deflecting the course of Punjab's history.
