Abstract

This study examines the role of the Punjab Archives in preserving historical knowledge and supporting research in South Asia. Using a mixed-method explanatory sequential design, data were gathered through surveys of archival staff and interviews with researchers. The Archives house over seven million documents and 70,000 rare books, serving as a vital resource for scholars. Findings show that the Archives provide essential services such as reference support, cataloguing, and scanning, though access to sensitive records remains restricted. Key challenges include preservation issues, limited digitization, security concerns, website limitations, and delays during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these barriers, staff expertise and user awareness remain strong. The study recommends strengthening digital cataloguing, expanding automation, ensuring long-term preservation, and enhancing staff training. Collaborations with national and international organizations are suggested to improve accessibility and safeguard Pakistan’s cultural heritage for future generations.
