Climate-Induced Disasters and Their Medical and Psychological Consequences in Pakistan and Neighboring States

This research explores the growing challenge of climate-induced natural disasters in Pakistan and neighboring South Asian states, where rising global temperatures, glacial melting, and unpredictable weather patterns have intensified the frequency and severity of floods, heatwaves, cyclones, and glacial lake outburst floods. The region, already marked by high population density and fragile healthcare systems, faces disproportionate medical consequences from such catastrophic events. The health impacts extend far beyond immediate injuries and fatalities. Floods frequently lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera, malaria, and dengue due to contaminated water supplies and inadequate sanitation. Heatwaves expose vulnerable populations to dehydration, heatstroke, and cardiovascular complications, while earthquakes and cyclones cause large-scale trauma, fractures, and long-term disabilities. Maternal and child health is particularly at risk, as disrupted access to nutrition, reproductive services, and essential medical care amplifies existing vulnerabilities. Mental health consequences, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, are also prevalent but often overlooked in disaster response strategies. The study further highlights the challenges faced by healthcare systems in responding to such crises. Limited medical infrastructure, shortages of trained personnel, and delays in emergency response hinder effective disaster management. Regional cooperation is therefore essential, as cross-border impacts demand stronger disease surveillance, early warning systems, and the sharing of medical expertise among South Asian states.
